How to check print resolution

Digital-image DPI depends on both available pixels and the physical size you plan to print.

1. Find pixel dimensions

Check the image properties for its true pixel width and height.

2. Choose print size

Enter the finished width and height, not the paper size including margins.

3. Review quality

Use the lower-axis DPI and quality band when deciding whether to resize.

print DPI = pixels on one axis ÷ printed inches on that axis

Print DPI questions

What DPI should I use for printing photos?

Use 300 DPI for sharp photos viewed up close. High-quality printing often remains excellent around 240 DPI, while posters viewed from farther away can look good at 150 DPI.

How do I calculate DPI from pixels?

Divide the image's pixel width by its printed width in inches, then repeat with the height. This calculator uses the lower result as the effective DPI because that axis limits detail.

Is DPI the same as PPI?

Not exactly. PPI describes image pixels per printed inch, while DPI technically describes printer ink dots per inch. People commonly say image DPI when they mean the effective PPI of a digital print.

Can changing metadata increase image quality?

No. Changing a DPI metadata field does not create pixels. Print quality improves only when the image has more real pixels or the physical print size is reduced.

Does this calculator upload my image?

No. You enter pixel dimensions only, and every calculation runs locally in your browser. No image or measurement data is uploaded.
