Senior Full Stack Engineer

Northwind Labs · Remote (US time zones) · Full-time

About Northwind Labs

Northwind Labs (illustrative example) builds scheduling software that helps clinics spend less time on admin and more time with patients.

About the role

Northwind Labs is hiring a Senior Full Stack Engineer to own features end to end, from database and API to the interface customers see, shipping complete product improvements quickly and safely.

You will lead the design and delivery of significant projects, set technical direction for your area and raise the bar for quality across the team.

You will join a product team of five engineers, a designer and a product manager working on the patient booking experience.

What you'll do

  • Ship complete features across the frontend, backend and database
  • Design APIs and data models that make the product easy to extend
  • Build responsive, accessible interfaces with reusable components
  • Write automated tests across the stack and keep CI green
  • Work with product and design to shape requirements and scope
  • Monitor what you ship and fix issues when they come up in production
  • Lead technical design for large features and make trade-offs explicit
  • Mentor other engineers and help shape team practices and standards
  • Identify technical debt and risks, and make the case for addressing them

What you'll bring

  • Typically 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent experience
  • Experience building and shipping web applications across frontend and backend
  • Strong JavaScript or TypeScript skills plus at least one server-side framework
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and API design
  • Ability to break features into small, shippable pieces
  • Hands-on experience with TypeScript, React, Node.js and PostgreSQL
  • A track record of leading projects from design through launch
  • Experience mentoring engineers and giving actionable feedback
  • Clear written and spoken communication, and a habit of collaborating openly

Nice to have

None of these are required. If you have some of them, tell us about it.

  • Experience with Next.js, AWS or Docker
  • Experience with cloud deployment and CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with product analytics and feature flags
  • Experience at an early-stage or fast-moving product team
  • Experience working directly with customers or stakeholders

Tech stack

  • Languages: TypeScript
  • Frameworks: React, Node.js, Next.js
  • Cloud & infrastructure: AWS, Docker
  • Databases & data: PostgreSQL

Compensation & benefits

  • Equity as part of the total compensation package
  • Health insurance
  • 401(k) or retirement plan
  • Paid time off
  • Learning and conference budget
  • Paid parental leave

This is a remote role. We work asynchronously by default and meet on video when it helps.

  • Work model: Remote
  • Location / time zone: US time zones

Interview process

We keep the process focused on real work and tell you what to expect at each step.

  • Intro call (30 minutes) with the hiring manager or recruiter about your experience and what you are looking for
  • Technical interview (60 minutes) working through a practical problem in your preferred language
  • System design discussion (60 minutes): a full feature, from data model and API to the user interface
  • Project deep dive (45 minutes) on a project you led, the decisions you made and what you learned
  • Collaboration and mentoring conversation (45 minutes) with engineers and a product partner
  • Final decision and offer. We aim to give you feedback after every stage

How to write a software engineer job description

Software developers create the applications that let people do specific tasks, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A good job description says exactly which part of that work this role owns.

  1. 1

    Pick role and level

Choose the engineering role, such as backend or full stack, and the seniority level, from junior to engineering lead.

  2. 2

    List the stack

Select the languages, frameworks, cloud services, databases, and tools the engineer will actually use.

  3. 3

    Write responsibilities

Describe five to eight concrete things the engineer will do, scoped to the seniority level.

  4. 4

    Separate must-have from nice-to-have

Keep must-haves short and move everything else to nice-to-have so qualified people are not discouraged.

  5. 5

Add pay range and work model

Include a good-faith pay range, benefits, the work model (remote, hybrid, or on-site), location, and employment type.

  6. 6

    Describe the interview process

List each interview stage so candidates know what to expect, then add an equal opportunity statement and how to apply.

Software engineer job description FAQ

What should a software engineer job description include?

A clear job title, a short company overview, a summary of the role, the main responsibilities, must-have qualifications, nice-to-have skills, the tech stack, the pay range and benefits, the work model and location, the interview process, an equal opportunity statement, and how to apply.

What are the responsibilities of a software engineer?

Software engineers analyze user needs, then design, build, test, and maintain software that meets them. Typical duties include writing and reviewing code, designing how components fit together, fixing production issues, and documenting systems. The exact focus depends on the role, such as frontend, backend, mobile, data, or DevOps.

How do you write a job description for a developer?

Pick the role and seniority, list the real tech stack, write five to eight specific responsibilities, separate true must-haves from nice-to-haves, add the pay range and work model, and describe the interview steps. Use plain, neutral language and avoid hype words like rockstar or ninja.

Should I include a salary range in a job posting?

Often you must. A growing number of US states and cities, including California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Washington, and Washington, D.C., require a good-faith pay range in job postings, with rules that vary by location and employer size. Even where it is not required, a range saves time for you and candidates. Check the laws that apply to you; this is not legal advice.

What is the difference between a junior and senior software engineer job description?

A junior description focuses on well-scoped tasks, learning, and mentorship, and typically asks for 0 to 2 years of experience including internships or projects. A senior description focuses on leading technical design, mentoring others, and owning outcomes, and typically asks for 5 or more years. Treat years as a guide, not a hard filter.

How long should a job description be?

Long enough to cover the sections above, short enough to scan quickly. Keep each list to the items that matter most, especially must-have requirements, because long lists of requirements discourage qualified people from applying. This tool shows a live word count and reading time so you can trim.
